Note 05 · Reading

Keep contrast tied to meaning

Contrast can separate a heading, a control or a quiet supporting detail.

Start with readable text

Text needs to remain distinguishable from its background under ordinary viewing conditions. Check small supporting text as well as the main paragraphs. A subtle palette loses its purpose if a reader must work to make out the words.

Use more than colour

An error can have a clear text explanation, and a current navigation item can carry a visible marker. Colour may reinforce those distinctions, but a reader should have another way to recognise them.

Check a different appearance

Review a light and dark appearance when the page supports both. A border or illustration that works on one background may disappear on the other. Keep focus indicators visible when navigating by keyboard.
